Bible Reading Plan for 2009

December 30, 2008

Next Year I have decided to read the bible, again. But I created my own reading chart. It is listed below in a table. The main points are besides Psalms I like to read an entire book of the bible before moving on to the next and I also decided to keep a general pattern of reading from the Old Testament, then New Testament, then Psalms. The reading is also a little bit Chronological but not completely. I also wanted to read one of the gospels every three or four months.

What a view

December 8, 2008

lifes-journeyBefore moving onward from my first steps, I want to take a minute and say that the view of this scene I have been exploring and named ‘My Life’s Journey’ is magnificent; but that is not the view I want to discuss.  I want to discuss my view–my world view.  The way I channel and funnel all the “information” I receive. My world view is Biblical Christianity.  All the information I receive is processed through my senses from a point of view that passes through the Bible.

I must first admit that I am a bible nerd.  I am nearing the end of a great experiment I started on January 1, 2008.  That was to read at least 1 chapter from the bible everyday.  For the most part I have completed each day with that minimum.  Reading the bible everyday this year has changed my life.  I am transformed by it daily.  Before this year I would spend the week in bible study making preparation for teaching my weekly Sunday School lesson, and I still do that, but this year I added just reading the bible and having God speak to me through it.  Nothing that fancy, just began on January 1st with Genesis 1:1 and Matthew 1:1 and this morning I read Amos chapter 6,7, and 8 and a few verses from Revelation 11:1-6.  From those passages God spoke a fresh new word to me.

I mentioned how I had a list of books I would like to read that would help me in becoming a better Christian, a better man, a better husband, a better father, a better …  But rather than listing those books.  I really and truly believe that as great as all those books may or may not be.  They do not have the answers I am looking for.

bibleOnly one book has all the answers anyone could ever need.  Not only are all the answers to life’s questions in there, but also the right questions to ask.  The book I speak of is the Holy Bible. Approximately 775,000 words; 31,000 verses; 1,190 chapters; 66 books.  It is complete and without error.  So my first steps are revealed through God’s word.  “Your word is a lamp unto my feet.”  How else will I know where to place my feet unless the way is shown by the light coming from the lamp of God’s words.  So really before I take any step, rather than ask myself what would Jesus do; I always try to ask, What does God say.  The two are the same, because Jesus did nothing but what God said to do.  Should my actions or steps be any different?

First Steps

December 5, 2008

From the bottom corner of my life’s journey picture.  Comes this image of the space right in front of my feet.  The place where the journey of life begins.  It is the present.  The here and now.  I am this tiny, small bush who needs to grow surrounded by a dry and arid place.  Far ahead is water for my growth.  This water is locked up and frozen found in the form of ice and snow, but when it is melted and released can give life and sustain it.  That is my destination, the frozen mountain peaks with their promise of water even though it is locked up, waiting for some source of heat or power to release it for future use.

first-steps

J R R Tolkien begins his epic story with a most interesting statement “It is a dangerous business”.  The author was referring to beginning a journey.  Every step especially the first one can be a danger.  The poet Robert Frost wrote a poem about “the road not taken”.  And that is an important point for any journey, also.  I begin from where I am.  Not where I would like to be.  There can be no regrets to paths that were not taken.  You are were you are.  Even the detours and unsafe paths you have walked and run on  have brought you to the place you are.

And from a recent popular movie which I enjoy the phrase “keep moving forward” really applies to life’s journey.  Again the only thing I would add would be direction and destination are important.I am not a big fan of the “Purpose Driven Life” written by Rick Warren, many people have been helped by this book, but for me the most important think I took from it was destination or purpose.  Where will this journey end?  If you don’t know where you are going, then why leave and begin?

I am not ungrateful for the place where I am, but from inside there is a drive that there is somewhere else that is better, where I am intended to be and it is not here.  But where?  In my picture it is a far off place high in distant mountain peaks capped with the pure white shimmer of snow.

destination_large

For me it is a heavenly place, were the King can sit and gaze down at all His kingdom.  A heavenly place where God lives.  Obviously this is just symbolic.  A place that is seperated (holy) from everything else.

I would like to  explore the beginning of a journey more, but I have recently been told that some planning and preparation is good before stepping out into a journey, but no one really knows everything they are going to need before they start, and I can not just sit back and wait to pack all my bags and make sure I have everything before leaving, or the first steps would never be taken.  I would still be just an observer of life rather than living it.  That voice was a “revelation” to me from God through His Holy Spirit.  You see I planned to read all these wonderful Christian books about being a great husband, father, and person and I sure that all those books are wonderful and can help, but rather than waiting on reading about it; It is time for the being and doing.  I will still read them, but I am going to get started and do some major on the job training.

In some ways, this was an important lesson for me.  I was nominated to become an elder in my church.  I was not ready, but as I become more active in my own life.  I am learning some valuable things like the importance of on-the-job training for somethings.  This web log like me is a work in progress.  I am sure there are plenty of sentence fragments and unfishined thoughts in this entry, like me an unfinished work, but why keep myself hidden until I am perfected, so in that spirit I am not going to refine this entry but just publish it.  With practice who knows maybe the next one will be a little better.
